Hey there, fellow adventurers in fatherhood and beyond! One way that I am trying to “unplug” more (in a way) is to increase my creativity and work my creative muscle so to speak.
Welcome back to my creative diary as I navigate Dave Birss’ Creative Bootcamp. Today’s task was an introspective journey. The challenge was to make a list of what makes me different from those around me (in my team, group, or what have you) and to identify which of these attributes make me valuable. So, grab a cup of coffee (or chicory, if you’re feeling adventurous after yesterday’s post), and let’s dive in!
Newborn father of practically Abrahamic proportions

First up, let’s talk about being a first-time father in my 40s as well as the primary caregiver to a newborn. This journey started with a surprise – my wife and I were blessed with our first son after being told it was highly unlikely. Now, here I am, juggling the roles of a doting dad and a career-driven medical writer and consultant.
My days start between 3 and 4 a.m., trying to get ahead on work before my youngest, A-Bomb, wakes up. The early mornings are a whirlwind of feedings, meetings, and diaper changes, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. This experience has honed my planning and problem-solving skills like nothing else.
Growing up in the hills
Next, let’s rewind to my upbringing in the Ozarks. My Dad’s family has roots in those hills dating back to before statehood. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the stark realities of poverty – some of my relatives didn’t even have indoor bathrooms. The first church I remember my Dad pastoring had his and hers outhouses. This seems unfathomable to most people here in the US.
This background has given me a unique perspective on the disparities in access to healthcare, especially for native and indigenous peoples. In my professional life, I strive to highlight these inequalities and advocate for better access and quality of care for all.
Living with pain
Living with a chronic illness that causes pain also sets me apart from others in my career group. The uncertainty and lack of clear diagnosis can be incredibly frustrating. However, this experience has also gifted me with deep empathy. I understand the fear and depression that come with being chronically ill. In my work, I aim to ensure that the voices of those who suffer are heard and that their experiences are not overlooked by healthcare professionals and policymakers.
So, how do these attributes add value to me and my team? On a microscopic level, my ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and see how individual steps fit into the larger picture is invaluable in project management. On a macroscopic level, my upbringing and health challenges fuel my empathy, particularly towards marginalized groups and those with chronic conditions. This dual perspective helps me connect more deeply with my audience and colleagues, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment.
Leverage what makes you “you”
Embracing what makes us different is not just about recognizing our uniqueness but also about leveraging these differences to add value to our lives and those around us. As I continue this creative bootcamp, I’m excited to see what other insights and adventures lie ahead. Stay tuned, keep your minds open, and let’s continue this journey together!
