The Three Signature Scents of New Fatherhood

Ah, fatherhood! It’s a journey of joy, surprises, and… let’s be honest, a lot of smells. As a new dad or dad-to-be, you’ll soon find that your olfactory senses are in for a wild ride. So, let’s talk about the three hallmark scents that will become as familiar to you as your own child’s smile: Coffee, Old Spice, and the unmistakable aroma of baby spit-up.

The Lifeline: Coffee

It starts with the coffee. Oh, the sweet nectar of life! Gone are the days when you sipped your morning cup leisurely while scrolling through the news or listening to your favorite podcast. Now, coffee is your lifeline. It’s the fuel that powers the sleep-deprived, diaper-changing superhero you’ve become. You’ll start to wonder if there’s a way to get it intravenously. And while you might have been a ‘one cup in the morning’ kind of guy, don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for that coffee pot by mid-afternoon. And maybe once more after dinner. Who’s counting, right? Heck, you may just stick a straw directly into the coffee pot.

The Shield: Old Spice

Then, there’s Old Spice – or your cologne, body spray, or deodorant of choice. It’s the armor you don for the day. Not only does it make you smell like the manly man you are, but it also serves a strategic purpose. It’s your personal shield against the array of smells that come with a newborn. You won’t believe the smells your bouncing bundle of joy can emanate. Whether it’s changing diapers or rocking your baby to sleep, a dash of Old Spice keeps you feeling fresh amid the chaos. Plus, it’s a comforting scent that reminds you of your own dad, bringing a sense of tradition to your new role.

The Badge of Honor: Baby Spit-Up

Finally, we arrive at the pièce de résistance: baby spit-up. Ah, the sour, milky scent that clings to your shirt, your shoulder, and sometimes, mysteriously, to your hair. The smell can permeate into your pores. Consider it a badge of honor. It means you’re doing your job, holding and feeding your little one. And let’s face it, no amount of Old Spice can mask this particular aroma. Sometimes, I swear that A-Bomb* is trying out for the next installment of The Exorcist with his ability to projectile puke.

Wearing baby spit-up is a rite of passage. It’s a sign that you’re a hands-on dad, fully immersed in the joys and challenges of fatherhood.

In the whirlwind of parenting, these scents blend into a unique fragrance that marks this special time in your life. They’re reminders of the love, the responsibility, and the sheer adventure of raising a child. So, embrace them. One day, believe it or not, you might just miss them. I know I did in the four years between Bonecrusher* and A-Bomb.*

There you have it, new dads and dads-to-be. Welcome to the wonderfully aromatic world of fatherhood. It’s a journey like no other, marked by these three distinct scents. Embrace them, laugh about them, and above all, remember that each one signifies a part of this incredible journey you’re on.

Best wishes, and carry on!
