Take some of the stink out of dirty diapers!
Ah, fatherhood. A journey of endless joys, surprises, and, yes, diapers. Lots and lots of dirty diapers. As a midlife dad to a newborn, I’ve become somewhat of a ninja in the art of diaper changing. But let’s be honest, even ninjas need a good soundtrack. So, here’s my secret to making the most of these fragrant moments: a killer playlist that even our baby, A-Bomb*, can groove to… For this week’s music recommendations, I’m sharing my top three diaper-changing anthems to turn this routine task into a rockin’ good time.
“Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz
First up, we have the classic “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz. There’s something about this song that just speaks to the soul of every diaper-changing dad. Maybe it’s the dream of flying away to a world where diapers change themselves or mystical pixies sprinkle their magical dust to whisk the poo away.
But as we all know, those rock star dreams are often interrupted by the reality of a stinky diaper. The upbeat tempo of this song, paired with its whimsical lyrics, provides the perfect backdrop for a quick and efficient diaper change. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce your little one to the magic of 90s rock.
“Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba
Next on the list is “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba. This song is the anthem of resilience, and let’s face it, when you’re on your fifth diaper before noon, you need all the resilience you can get. The chorus, “I get knocked down, but I get up again,” becomes a mantra as you tackle the endless cycle of diapers. It’s also a great way to teach your kids about perseverance, albeit in a slightly unconventional context. Dance around the changing table–well, not “around” the table since you can’t leave the little one unattended, sing at the top of your lungs, and show that dirty diaper who’s boss!
“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
Lastly, we have “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars. This song is a modern classic and for good reason. Its funky beats and catchy lyrics are the perfect remedy to the often mundane task of diaper changing. Imagine this: You’re grooving to the beat, baby’s giggling, and for a moment, you’re not just a dad changing a diaper; you’re a dancing hero. “Uptown Funk” brings a sense of coolness to the changing table, and who knows, your little one might just start bopping along, especially since he’s the one who has brought the funk…so to speak.
Diaper changing doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. With the right soundtrack, it can be a time of bonding, laughter, and maybe even a little bit of dancing. These songs have turned a “funky” routine task into a mini-concert. So, next time you’re faced with a diaper disaster, remember to crank up the tunes and embrace the chaos. After all, these are the moments that make fatherhood truly special. And who knows, maybe you’ll even start looking forward to the next diaper change. Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but at least you’ll be rocking out while you do it!
For those who are wondering about Spider-Man* and Bonecrusher*, recently, they have been digging “Father Christmas” by the Kinks in the spirit of the holidays. I actually didn’t introduce them to this classic; I can’t believe I didn’t think of it. They discovered this gem while watching Amazon Prime’s “Merry Little Batman”, for which they both give two big thumbs up. Bonecrusher has made us watch the intro sequence over and over again.
For anyone interested, the boys and I have a Midlife Fatherhood playlist available on Amazon Music. Please note that we do not receive any compensation from Amazon Music…we’re just big music fans!
*Their names have been changed to protect the innocent (or not-so-innocent at times). This is what happens whenever you let little boys decide on nicknames.
