Now that my wife and I are in the third trimester of our pregnancy journey, our son has started to live up to his moniker, A-Bomb, with his massive front kicks and gravity-defying in utero flips.

Gentlemen, have you ever wished you had a crystal ball to predict the future? Well, if your partner, like mine, is in her third trimester, you’re in luck! Introducing the “Pregnant Magic 8-Ball”–a fun way to get answers to life’s pressing questions while bonding with your baby. (Plus, no batteries required!)

The Setup

Before you start, ensure that your partner is as comfortable as possible and is in a good mood. (Pro tip: A recliner and a bucket of Long John Silver’s hush puppies help.) Next, gently place your hand on her belly and ask your question. Wait for the baby’s kick. Voila! You have your answer.

Decoding the Message

So, does it take a wizened Reader of the ‘Tarot’ (that sounds very Tolkien-esque) to determine what the bundle of joy is telling you? Alas, no.

Simply,

• One kick: “Yes”
• Two kicks: “No”
• A series of rapid kicks: “Ask again later” or “I’m practicing my kickboxing, Dad… Thanks for those parent-tot martial arts lessons!”

Sample Questions to Ask

• “Will I get a good night’s sleep tonight?”
  • A-Bomb: “No”
• “Should we go out to Tapatio’s for fajitas for supper? [Note: I do not have an affiliate link to Tapatio’s…but they do have some awesome food. If you’re on the south side, check out their restaurant and tienda.]
  • A-Bomb: “Yes”
• Will Zachary Levi’s career rebound from that monstrosity known as Shazam: Fury of the Gods?
  • A-Bomb: Crickets. Heck, there are some things even he can’t foresee…or unsee.

The Do’s and Don’ts

• Do make sure to always ask fun and light-hearted questions.
• Don’t ask questions where you already know the answer. (For example, “Will Mommy be made if I fly with the boys to see the band in Vegas?”)

Make it a Game the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Invite the family and close friends to join in. Have them write down their questions, and let the “Pregnant Magic 8-Ball” decide their fate. Bonecrusher* has been asking for a pet dinosaur recently…

While the “Pregnant Magic 8-Ball” might not be 100% accurate (disclaimer: it’s all in good fun!), it is a humorous way for expectant dads to bond with their unborn child and partner. So, the next time you’re faced with a dilemma, just remember–the answer lies in the belly!
