Travel has always been a passion of mine. Before the pitter-patter of tiny feet echoed through my home, I had the privilege of exploring many corners of the world. Each passport stamp told of a unique story of adventure, culture, and personal growth. But of all the places I’ve been, the furthest from home was a trip to Siberia.
Siberia, a vast and rugged expanse of Russia, was not what I was expecting. One summer, I volunteered at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center there. It was a commitment, both in terms of distance and purpose. Yet, the allure of Siberia was twofold for me. Not only was I eager to possibly make a difference in the lives of those struggling with addiction, but I was also returning to a land where some of my family once called home. The connection was palpable, and the experience was nothing short of transformative.
The people I met and the sense of purpose I felt there are memories I cherish to this day. It was a time of independence, exploration, and self-discovery. But as the saying goes, “life happens,” and with the birth of my sons (Spider-Man* and Bonecrusher*…and with A-Bomb* due to arrive in November), my world, and my travel priorities, shifted dramatically.
The birth of my sons marked a new chapter in my life. The thrill of solo adventures was replaced by the joy of seeing the world through their innocent eyes. Suddenly, the idea of traveling without them for extended periods became unimaginable. Every departure, no matter how short, felt like an eternity away from them. I no longer eagerly anticipate my next business trip.
I now have a newfound respect for parents, especially those in the armed services, who have to leave their families behind for long durations. Their sacrifice is immeasurable, and my heart goes out to them.
Now, my travels are predominantly within the confines of North America. The wild terrains of Siberia have been replaced by the scenic routes here in Florida, the musical streets of New Orleans, and even an iguana refuge in Honduras.
My criteria for choosing a destination have evolved too. It’s no longer just about my interests but about places my sons would love. Whether it’s a theme park, a swamp hike, a historical landmark, or even a trip to the Superman museum in Metropolis, IL, their excitement and wonder make every trip worthwhile.
In conclusion, travel, like life, is a journey of evolution. From the vastness of Siberia to the family-friendly locales of North America, my travel narrative has transformed, reflecting the different stages of my life. While the destinations may have changed, the essence remains the same: to explore, to connect, and to create lasting memories. And as a father, there’s no greater joy than creating those memories with my family by my side.
