One aspect of becoming a parent of “advanced” age that few like to discuss is the risk involved to the developing baby and the mother. Don’t get me wrong…it is worth it in the end, but the process can be nerve-wrecking.
Because of these risks, the expectant mother’s OB often refers the expectant parents to visit a fetal medicine specialist. Consulting the fetal medicine specialist with your partner is a milestone in this pregnancy journey. This is an opportunity to gain insight into your baby’s health, understand any potential concerns, and strengthen your bond as parents and partners.

My wife and I have had to consult a fetal medicine specialist with multiple pregnancies at this point. One thing you can expect in this visit, based on our experiences, is the countless number of ultrasound images and measurements the technician will take to help your doctor. As the ultrasound monitor lights up, your heart skips a beat. There, on the screen, is the tiny life you and your wife have been nurturing. The ultrasound technician expertly guides the ultrasound probe, revealing your baby’s precious features. They will measure every limb and imaginable body part of the baby. The experience is surreal – seeing those little arms and legs, the fluttering heartbeat, and the unmistakable bond between mother and the baby.
A Shared Moment of Connection
While you as ol’ Dad may not be the one carrying the baby, this experience is a reminder that your role as an expectant father is still vital. Holding your wife’s hand and watching her expressions during the ultrasound creates a unique connection between the three of you. The smiles, tears, and shared laughter (in our case at least since A-Bomb* refused to hold still and appeared to take the “fighting stance” position from martial arts) reaffirm the strength of your partnership as you embark on this journey into parenthood together.

Well, What About Our Recent Visit?
We actually have had to go back to see the fetal medicine specialist twice (so far) during A-Bomb’s development. During the first visit, he wouldn’t cooperate enough for the technician to perform the fetal EKG, an important test since “advanced maternal age” pregnancies run a higher risk of fetal cardiac issues. We partially blame the food we had just eaten at an (amazing) pupuseria here in Tampa—apparently, A-Bomb got a kick out of it, too! We did manage to get amazing US photos from the procedure. During the second visit, A-Bomb was more cooperative, and the fetal EKG came back normal.
Don’t worry…or try not to worry…if you and your partner have to visit a fetal medicine specialist. As an expectant father, this can be a poignant chapter in your journey to parenthood. It’s a moment of awe, connection, and love as you witness the miracle of life unfolding before your eyes. Embracing the emotions, whether they’re joyful or tinged with concern, is a testament to your commitment as a partner and parent.
