Musical musings

Recently, I posted how we encourage our boys to listen to music and have fun with it. It helps keep them active and also gives them another avenue to vent.

We also encourage them to keep an Amazon playlist of their music. They feel a sense of ownership, in a way, and it also allows us to know what they are listening to as well. (We have also made our musical recommendations available in a Midlife Fatherhood public playlist in case you would like to follow along.)

This week I asked them, “If they could pick a song to have their best friend listen to, what would it be?” One surprised me with his answer…read below, and you can most likely guess which answer surprised me more.

Spider-Man* supports the musical stylings of his fellow web warrior

As I was driving Spider-Man to the grocery store, we discussed music. He really likes adding music to their personal playlist, and he is not usually as discerning as his little brother. He was having me listen to various songs of his choice when I asked him which song he would recommend.

Spider-Man’s recommendation this week is Miles Morales by Dann Dib (except Spider-Man refers to this as “The Multiverse Song”). Spider-Man says it is an exciting song. He likes the catchy lyrics (which include “I’m Miles Morales, you hearing my name don’t ignore it| I’m serving these villains like orders”) as well as the drumming beat.

I am, by far, not a rap aficionado, so I’m definitely a rap music novice. For me, the song’s hook does its job with the positive message of “I won’t drop | I won’t quit | And I won’t stop until I win”. The lyrics to this song are considerably more positive than Dann Dib’s darker take on the Joker in…you guessed it, Joker. The latter is too dark for Spider-Man and Bonecrusher* to listen to at this age, but Miles Morales is age-appropriate.

Bonecrusher picks a 90s Grammy winner

First, I should preface Bonecrusher’s suggestion by adding that he has very discriminating tastes…at times. He will tell you that he likes to rock out…and then at other times wants to listen to the best of Parry Gripp.

Bonecrusher and I have listened to a LOT of music this past year or so. Since his brother started kindergarten this year and was leaving in the pre-dawn hours with Mom to go to school, Bonecrusher and I had a lot of Daddy-Bonecrusher time.

I would get him up and ready each morning. Then, we would brave the (often snail’s paced) commute to drop him off at Naina & Pop Pop’s for the day. During this commute, we would usually listen to music…lots of different types of music, ranging from classic rock to country to soul and everything in between.

That being said, this week Bonecrusher told me the one song, at this time, he would want his best friend to listen to is 1995 Grammy award-winning Come to My Window by Melissa Etheridge. He seems to like the guitar riffs as well as the (at times) raspy vocal stylings. I know he doesn’t understand all the undercurrents of the song’s lyrics, but he does comprehend the theme of coming home to see a loved one.

Dad’s mantra for the week…

So, what song this week has summed up ol’ Dad’s life? This week, I’ve revisited Oasis, and Roll With It expresses life well with “You gotta roll with it | You gotta take your time | You gotta say what you say…” Unfortunately, the Gallagher brothers are examples of what not to do in a sibling relationship. My boys, so far, are very close and get along quite well. Let’s hope that once A-Bomb* comes along they keep up the good times rather than devolve into a Gallagher-esque fiasco.

Feel free to follow our musical suggestions on Amazon Music or read our various reviews.

We should have another post about our adventures soon. Until then, keep smiling and carry on!

*Their names have been changed to protect the innocent (or not-so-innocent at times). This is what happens whenever you let little boys decide on nicknames.
