First, having to wait to tell everyone we’re expecting is torturous! I want to scream it out loud and revel in the outward preparation (and anticipation) of Baby Groot**. We aren’t telling hardly anyone yet*** since it is early on and so much can happen. We definitely are not telling Spider-Man* and Bonecrusher* until later in the pregnancy. Spider-Man has been praying for a baby for some time now (while Bonecrusher has been praying for a T-rex with spots on its belly…I hate to break the news to him…)
Today, we meet Baby Groot!
This afternoon is the OB appointment where we take our first ultrasound (US) of the baby. This first US is performed early, especially in high-risk pregnancies like ours, to make sure it is a viable pregnancy. The doctor wants to check for the fetal heartbeat and rule out ectopic pregnancy by affirming that the fetus is in the uterus (in utero). Also, by this point, we should be able to tell if it is just one Baby Groot or if any other little potential superheroes are joining our growing Avengers team. (The boys like to say, “Avengers assemble!”)
Fears the ultrasound can quell
So far, my wife has been having a more difficult time with this pregnancy than with either Spider-Man or Bonecrusher. We are more apprehensive with this go-round (with the exception of our first time… maybe). We think this is it. We’re getting older and more tired. One last hurrah, so to speak.
This US should help ease our fears and anxieties. At least, it should ease them some. It’s normal to be apprehensive. After this afternoon, we should at least know that Baby Groot is in utero and has a heart beat.
We are wanting a healthy baby above all. Whether Baby Groot is a girl or a boy, it doesn’t really matter to us. Spider-Man in his prayers has been equivocating between brother and sister. The main reason I personally would want to know the gender is so we can buy gender-specific clothes and toys. I know that may be stereotypical, but I think it’s fun buying stuff Baby Groot can use, and may like. We wouldn’t mind a little girl, but I am also OK with being a Fred MacMurray (My Three Sons, for you young folk).
Update on our ultrasound
The US was a success! We got to see Baby Groot for the first time. Yes, it is only Baby Groot and not more of a Guardians of the Galaxy crew in utero this time. The US technician said that everything is on target and looked good.

We could hear Baby Groot’s heartbeat. Amazing! It was a healthy 148 bpm. According to old wives’ tales, this heart rate would indicate a girl. Take that with more than a proverbial grain of salt since that old wives’ tale is not rooted in fact (at least not at this point in the pregnancy). It’s still fun to speculate.
I still plan on posting updates concerning our pregnancy experience. I hate that I have to stockpile these posts until a later date when we go public with the big news.***
Until then, enjoy Baby Groot’s first picture!

*Their names have been changed to protect the innocent (or not-so-innocent at times). This is what happens whenever you let little boys decide on nicknames.
**Baby Groot is not going to be the baby’s name. [Vetoed! 🙂 ] Until the baby is old enough to choose their own nickname or at least until the gender is revealed, however, “Baby Groot” is sticking.
